MANILA--Rob Gier will miss the home World Cup Qualifier against Uzbekistan on Sept. 8 due to knee injury.

The former Aldershot centre-back said on his Twitter account that he needed surgery on the knee after he got it hurt during their opener against Bahrain last June 11. There was no timetable on when he will return to the line-up.

A defiant Gier posted a photo that stated “Gutted is an understatement but I’ll be back soon enough.”
The 34-year-old Gier had 63 appearances for the country and scored two goals for the Azkals. He wore the armband for much of last year, up to the Peace Cup Final last August, after that he gave the captaincy to Phil Younghusband.

His absence might give the Azkals a gaping hole in the center of defense as Amani Aguinaldo, Luke Woodland, and Juani Guirado were the only centerbacks left from the 23-man team that faced both Bahrain and Yemen last June.

But it left a glimmer of hope for Alvaro Silva, who signed with Daejeon Citizen of K-League from Kuwait’s Al-Qadsia last week.
