MANILA--This is not a typo error.

Ateneo created a huge ripple to start the UAAP women's football tournament, toppling reigning titlists UP by the slimmest of scorelines at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.

With their backline playing like the final, the Lady Eagles put a huge dent to the title defense of the Lady Maroons, with Nona Amoncio's fifth minute strike the only difference in the Katipunan derby.

The senior winger drilled a free kick into the roof of Nicole Adlawan's net to bag maximum points for Ateneo gaffer Jaypee Merida on his debut in the women's division.

Anto Gonzales's ladies were left to rue their missed chances as well as the tough Ateneo defence they faced with Marianne Caparros and Bea Velasco combined forces to thwart BG Sta. Clara, Cristina delos Reyes and the UP frontline.

UP came closest to equalize in the 83rd minute but Delos Reyes muffed her backheel attempt to put their title retention bid on the wrong foot.
