MANILA—The Philippine Lady Volcanoes eye a spot in the Asian Sevens Series in the Asia Trophy Series in Vientiane this weekend.

Mainly sponsored by Transcom, which has been a long time partner of the PRFU, the Lady Volcanoes will fly to the Laotian capital to play the host nation plus five more countries in the tournament.

The top two teams after the round robin tourney will move on to the Asian Sevens Series in September in Hong Kong, South Korea, and Sri Lanka. South Korea is also joining the Asia Trophy Series.

“A Trophy Series promotion would be amazing for the Women’s program. I have witnessed their progress since their outstanding bronze medal finish at the 2015 SEA Games. I have all the confidence in the world if the girls play to the best of their ability so they can secure a top two finish at the Trophy Series. This will be a boost ahead of the 2017 SEA Games,’’ shared Jakey Letts, the national teams head of PRFU.

Shirley Russell will coach the Lady Volcanoes, while Aiden Ng and veteran male Volcano Chris Everingham are also part of the coaching staff.

“Aiden, Chris and Shirley have worked extensively with the women’s team. They all bring a wealth of experience, and I look forward to seeing the women execute all their newly found skills and knowledge of Rugby 7s,” Letts added.

HMR Philippines Inc., the Philippine Sports Commission, and the Philippine Olympic Committee also take part in supporting the Lady Volcanoes' bid.
