MANILA--Herbert Embuldeniya, former AIBA executive committee member and recipient of the AIBA Order of Merit, passed away at 2am, April 6, at the Intensive Care Unit of the Makati Medical Center. He was 86.

His wife Nieva, a former vice-chairperson of the AIBA Women’s Commission, was at his side when he passed on.

Embuldeniya, originally from Sri Lanka, learned to boxed when he was still at school. He went on to become a boxing official in Sri Lanka, Pakistan, and his adopted country, Canada, before becoming one of the most active tournament officials in AIBA.

His remains will be flown to Winnipeg after a two-day wake in Makati.
