Elfrid Payton tells story behind trademark hairdo

By Ivan Saldajeno

MAKATI—Elfrid Payton arguably has the most unique hairdo in the NBA right now.

In an interview with a couple of sportswriters at the Don Bosco School here on Thursday, the Orlando Magic guard said that it all started with a vow made by his team at John Ehret High School.

"In high school, our team was pretty good. We got a chance to win the championship. I said that we won't cut our hair if we win the championship," said Payton.

However, Ehret was eliminated in the semifinals, so he had to pay the price.

But when he saw the haircut, he was impressed with it.

"I just kinda like what my hair was doing, so I kept it. Now, we're here," continued Payton.

The hairdo turned out to be a lucky charm for him as he became a part of the NBA All-Rookie First Team in 2015 and is now a key player for the Magic as they build up for the future.

Payton is currently in town as guest coach for the Jr. NBA National Training Camp this weekend.
