Bolick spoils former team's Cinderella run as San Beda dethrones La Salle as FilOil champ

By Ivan Saldajeno

MANILA--Two years ago, San Beda made headlines in the FilOil Flying V Preseason Premier Cup by beating La Salle in the final to spark what would be a great year for the squad capped with a national title in the PCCL.

On Sunday night, the Red Lions edged the Green Archers again for all the marbles, but this time, a former Archer made the front pages.

Robert Bolick once again broke the hearts of his former squad as San Beda subdued La Salle, 75-72, at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan City.

Bolick dropped the game-winning triple with 8.5 seconds left for the Red Lions, who completed an 11-game sweep of the tournament.

San Beda was actually down, 69-72, within the last two minutes until AC Soberano recovered the ball following a block by Ben Mbala and shot a triple that tied the game at 72-all.

La Salle failed to get back the lead, eventually setting up Bolick's heroic act, in which he pulled up the trey off the outstretched arms of Santi Santillan.

Bolick finished with 24 points, eight rebounds, and six assists, while Javee Mocon added 13 points, 13 rebounds, two assists, two blocks, and one steal for the Red Lions, who will now shift their attention to their NCAA title defense starting on July 8.

Ben Mbala had 25 points, 14 rebounds, one assist, and four blocks for La Salle, which failed to complete a Cinderella run that would have netted the team its second consecutive championship in the tournament.
