Marikina shocks Negros in huge PFL upset

By Ivan Saldajeno

PASAY--In what would be the biggest upset so far in the PFL, JPV Marikina hacked out a shock 2-1 win against Ceres Negros at the Rizal Memorial Stadium in Manila on Saturday night.

With the Marikina Sports Complex still under rehabilitation, Marikina opted to "borrow" Rizal Memorial from Manila, which played at Makati also on Saturday, for what would be credited as a home game for the upstart franchise.

Takumi Uesato struck first for Marikina in the 56th minute, while J Baguioro added another goal 13 minutes later for the 2-0 count.

Bienve Marañon provided a late scare with an 87th minute strike that put Negros on the board, but that turned out to be the Visayan club's last hurrah.

"We're very lucky. Our teamwork is very good," said Uesato, whose side zoomed to second place following Makati's loss to Manila.

Despite suffering its first loss of the season, Negros remained at fifth place with four points.
