Pirates in 3-0 start, scrape past gutsy Stags

By Ricky Manliguis

MANILA—Lyceum cruised to its third straight win, but had tense moments in the endgame in a 78-73 victory over San Sebastian in the featured game of Friday’s NCAA Season 93 action at the FilOIl Flying V Centre in San Juan City.

Building a comfortable lead in the waning moments, the Intramuros-based squad survived the late scare by the Stags many thanks to team captain MJ Ayaay for the school’s best start since joining the league in 2011.

After a CJ Perez three gave LPU a commanding 70-59 lead with 6:44 left in the fourth, this season’s hosts staged an 11-2 uprising led by Michael Calisaan and Allyn Bulanadi to come within 72-70, time down to 1:44.

Ayaay went on a tear from there, scoring a triple for a 77-70 lead, before splitting from the stripe for the finishing touch.

Perez scored 20 points with five rebounds, three assists and two steals in his first game against his former club. Ayaay contributed 17, nine coming in the final period, while import Harry Mike Nzeusseu issued a double-double of 13 boards and 10 points.
Calisaan paced the Stags, now in a six-team logjam at 1-2, with a league-best 28 points along with 12 rebounds, with Bulanadi chipping in 16.
