SAN JUAN -- In what could have been a shootout for the ages, UE fended off wave after wave of attacks from UP to come up with a 73-64 payback triumph in the UAAP men's basketball tilt Sunday evening at the Filoil Flying V Centre.

Both the Red Warriors and the Fighting Maroons engaged in a slugfest in the first 35 minutes before Manong Derrick Pumaren's men surprisingly pulled away in the final five minutes to get back into the postseason contention, improving to 3-7 win-loss card.

Burly forward Alvin Pasaol posted a double-double tonight with 32 points and 11 rebounds on an insane 52% clip from the field, including 5/9 from downtown.

Mark Olayon flirted with a triple double, coming up just two dimes short while pitching in with 11 markers and 10 boards.

With the entire starting unit of State U outscored by Pasaol, the bench stepped up with the Gomez De Liaño twins who topscored for Bo Perasol but it was not enough for the Fighting Maroons who went down fighting at 4-6, tied with NU in fifth.

Juan led UP with 22 points on a 9/15 clip from the field, while Javi put up a double-double of 17 and 11 boards.

Pasaol came out blazing in the opening frame, scoring nine points from downtown to bring UE up by 8, 21-13.

UP then responded with a 10-0 counter to open the second period to get the lead, but the Red Warriors replied with a 9-0 burst to retain the eight-point cushion at the break.

The GDL twins then got to work at the restart, with Javi's 8 third quarter points ignited an uprising to momentarily regain the upperhand, but Jason Varilla restored UE's advantage at the end of 30 minutes.

Pasaol then saved his best for last in the final frame, starting it with back-to-back treys to pad their lead to seven.

And to cap it off, the sophomore defied cramps to knock down the dagger triple with 2:49 to play to end any resistance from the Fighting Maroons.
