PASIG--Marinerong Pilipino survived a late rally from Zark's-Lyceum to take a 94-92 win at the start of the PBA D-League Aspirants Cup at the Ynares Sports Arena on Thursday night.

Up by as much as 17 points, the Skippers saw their lead being chopped down to two with an eternity of basketball left, but they held on as the Jawbreakers lost steam in the end.

Following a relatively slow start, Marinero sizzled in the second quarter, outscoring Zark's, 30-15, to go up, 47-34, at halftime. The club stretched its lead to 17, 56-39, early in the third quarter.

The Jawbreakers, however, showed some signs of life late in the third, cutting the lead to 11, 69-58, at the end of the period and went full blast in the fourth, cutting the lead further down to two, 85-83, within the last two minutes.

They somehow fizzled down the stretch when they missed on crucial triples that could have given them the lead, and crucial freebies from Billy Robles and Renzo Subido down the stretch kept the Skippers afloat in the end.

Subido finished with 20 points, three rebounds, and five assists, while Rian Ayonayon added 15 points, three rebounds, two assists, and two blocked shots for Marinero.

Jaycee Marcelino also collected 20 markers for Zark's-Lyceum on 7-of-9 shooting with four boards, three dimes, two interceptions, and one rejection.
