Negros solidifies bid for top seed with close win at Laguna

By Ivan Saldajeno

BIÑAN—Ceres Negros continued its march to a higher seed in the PFL playoffs with a 1-0 win against Stallion Laguna at the Biñan Football Stadium on Saturday.

Bienve Marañon's 28th minute goal turned out be the only difference of the match as Negros provisionally moved to second place with 42 points as Makati is hosting Cebu in another match ongoing as of press time.

Laguna provided some scare in the 88th minute as Dan Villarico charged through the Negros defense and was already inside the box only to be stripped of the ball.

However, Laguna and even its fans expressed their dismay when they thought the referee missed what they thought was a penalty call.

Laguna remains stuck in a tie with Marikina for sixth place with 28 points with the latter ahead on goal difference.

Negros is now within six points of Manila, which won via forfeiture against Ilocos on Friday, for first place with four matches at hand.

Both teams will meet again on Wednesday at the said venue in what would be Laguna's last home game of the regular season.
