Thompson's Heroics Fall Short as Bombers Escape Altas in OT Thriller

By Dugout Philippines

Scottie Thompson turned it up in overtime, but his almost single-handed extra time performance was not enough as JRU beat Perpetual Help, 80-76, in a crucial NCAA game at the FilOil Flying V Arena in San Juan City.

Thompson scored all the 13 points of the Altas in overtime, but the Heavy Bombers held on to the win that put them up to third place after their opponents missed a huge chance to tie the game.

JRU opened the overtime period with a 9-2 run to take a 72-65 lead, but Thompson scored seven straight points to tie the game, 72-all, with 1:34 remaining.

Michael Mabulac completed a three-point play to put the Bombers ahead again, 75-72, but Thompson answered with a layup against four defenders to cut the lead to one, 75-74.

JRU scored in the next play, but Thompson answered with a field goal of his own and the lead was one again, 77-76.

Abdul Abdul-Wahab split on his charities in the following offensive, giving Perpetual Help a golden chance to tie the game.

Ric Gallardo, however, missed a layup on the other end. Gab Daganon grabbed the offensive rebound, but he lost the ball and was called for a backcourt violation.

Jaycee Asuncion sealed the Heavy Bombers' win with two free throws.

Philip Paniamogan led JRU with 22 points, while Mabulac added 21.

Thompson had a game-high 26 markers for Perpetual Help, but he had to carry the game on his own as his teammates Jong Baloria, Harold Arboleda, and Justine Alano sat out the rest of the game due to fouling out.
