JRU takes third place after OT win versus Perpetual Help

By Dugout Philippines

The JRU Heavy Bombers fought back from an early fourth quarter deficit to stop the Perpetual Help Altas in overtime, 82-79, in their NCAA third place battle at the FilOil Flying V Arena.

The Bombers trailed, 51-57, with 9:25 left in the fourth period.

But they outscored the Altas, 18-8, in the next six minutes to take a 69-65 lead.

Perpetual Help responded with an 8-2 run to take a 73-71 advantage with 1:13 remaining in regulation.

But Tey Teodoro forced the overtime period after scoring a two-pointer with 21.7 seconds to go as the Altas failed to connect a game-winner in the ensuing possession.

The Heavy Bombers then started the extra time with a 7-2 blitz to lead, 80-75, with 1:55 left.

But Gab Dagangon kept the Altas in the game after converting a field goal and two free throws in succession to cut the lead to just one, 80-79, with 27.3 seconds remaining.

Dagangon had a golden chance to retake the lead for them after getting a steal.

But he misfired a reverse layup as Philip Paniamogan grabbed the loose ball and got fouled by Harold Arboleda.

Paniamogan converted two free throws to extend JRU's lead to three with 11.8 seconds to play.

Perpetual Help tried to force another overtime, but Jong Baloria missed a three-pointer at the buzzer, dropping the team to fourth place.

Teodoro led the Bombers, who will take on the losing team in the San Beda-Arellano game later in the day in the next round, with 16 points, three rebounds, and two assists.
