In a huge development, Manny Pangilinan officially relieved Chot Reyes of his duties as head coach of the national team.
In line with that, Pangilinan, the president of the SBP, gave the go signal to form a selection committee for the coach and the players of the Philippine team that will compete in the 2015 FIBA Asia Championship.
PBA Commissioner Chito Salud relayed the decision after the league's weekly board meeting in Quezon City.
Salud said that he told Pangilinan of the concerns of the team owners.
Under Reyes, Gilas made a historic run in last year's FIBA Asia Championship, finishing second and took an automatic place in the FIBA World Cup.
Despite a 1-4 card, Gilas pushed its opponents to the limit, drawing admiration from them.
However, Gilas slipped to seventh place in the recent Asian Games, the worst finish by a Philippine team in the said basketball competition.
