Red Lions return to top after routing Chiefs

By Dugout Philippines

The San Beda Red Lions retook first place in the final NCAA standings after drubbing the Arellano Chiefs, 97-69, in their playoff match at the FilOil Flying V Arena.

After a slow start that saw them trailing, 18-24, early in the second period, the Red Lions outscored the Chiefs, 25-8, in the rest of the quarter to open a 43-32 halftime lead.

The impending blowout continued as San Beda extended the lead to 16, 51-35, with 7:51 left in the third quarter.

Arellano tried to fight back with eight straight points to cut the lead to eight, 51-43, midway into the third.

But the Red Lions took control from there as they stomp their dominance on the Chiefs.

Baser Amer led San Beda, which will face fourth-seeded Perpetual Help in the Final Four, with 19 points, three rebounds, and five assists.

Levi Hernandez, on the other hand, made 11 points to top score Arellano, which will battle third-seeded JRU in the other semifinal action.
