A few days after current Global star Jason De Jong announced his retirement from international play, fellow Azkals midfielder Chieffy Caligdong followed suit.

The current Green Archers United skipper announced his decision to retire from the Azkals through his Facebook account.

"Even though I will not be playing in the team anymore, my heart, prayers, and support are always with the team," Caligdong said in his statement.

He thanked his Azkals teammates, the coaching staff, the management, his family, his friends, and the fans for the "unforgettable memories" he had.

"It will always be in my heart," Caligdong added.

He also called on the current and even the next players of the national team to "play with all your heart and wear the flag with honor and pride!"

He also told everyone, "Let's all support the Philippine football as it continues to flourish in our country."

Caligdong became the team captain for the Azkals following an injury to longtime skipper Aly Borromeo.

Caligdong began to shine brightly for the team when he made the first of four goals for the Azkals against Sri Lanka in the second leg of their FIFA World Cup qualifying tie that helped them reach the second round of qualifying for the first time.
