By Dugout Philippines

Adamson and NU went off to a hot start in the men's division of the UAAP Chess Tournament at the Henry Sy Building inside the De La Salle University.

The Soaring Falcons won over the UST Growling Tigers, 2.5-1.5, in the opening round before routing the UP Fighting Maroons, 3.5-0.5, in the following round.

Behind last season’s Rookie of the Year Austin Literatus, the Bulldogs downed the Ateneo Blue Eagles, 3-1, in the first round before stunning defending champions FEU Tamaraws, 3-1, in the second.

Adamson, last year's runner-up, and NU now have six points each, a half point ahead of UST, which has 5.5 points.

Meanwhile, WIM Janelle Mae Frayna’s defeated reigning MVP and fellow WIM Jan Jodilyn Fronda in Board 1 to lead the FEU Lady Tamaraws to a 2.5-1.5 win against the De La Salle Lady Archers in the opening round of the women's division.

The Lady Tamaraws would then take down the UE Lady Warriors, 3-1, in the second round to amass 5.5 points after the first two.

FEU is a half point clear of La Salle, which bounced back with a 3.5-0.5 blowout of NU, at the top.

The Lady Bulldogs are tied with the UST Tigresses in third place with 4.5 points.

The action will resume on Wednesday as the league had to give way to Pope Francis' Philippine visit.
