Ateneo needed the full length of its UAAP women's volleyball match against UP before hacking out a 25-18, 22-25, 25-20, 15-25, 15-11 win at the FilOil Flying V Arena in San Juan City.
The Lady Maroons pulled off a surprise in the second set as they led the Lady Eagles by as much as seven en route to the 25-22 win, the first time the defending champions, who were fresh from finishing third in the ASEAN University Games, conceded a set this season.
Ateneo's struggles continued in the next two sets as the team only got the third on a 16-7 run before again giving up a set to UP in the fourth.
In the decider, the Lady Eagles, after exchanging scores with the Lady Maroons, finally sealed their fifth straight win with a 4-1 rally.
Alyssa Valdez led Ateneo with 25 points, while rookie Bea De Leon added 12.
