Batang Pier open Commissioner's Cup with win against Carnival

By Dugout Philippines

GlobalPort began the 2015 PBA Commissioner's Cup with a 100-89 win against Kia at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.

The Batang Pier broke out of a 10-all deadlock in the first quarter and led by as much as 24 points.

The newly-renamed Carnival chopped the gap to half late in the second quarter before conceding Stanley Pringle's buzzer-beating layup to enter the lockers with a 42-56 deficit.

GlobalPort threatened to pull away again as the club pushed its lead to 19 at some points of the third quarter.

Kia then mounted another rally to come to within seven, 85-92, with 3:59 remaining.

But that was the closest the Carnival, who were without head coach Manny Pacquiao, who judged yesterday's Miss Universe, could get to as a Jewel Ponferrada dunk sparked the game-turning 8-0 Batang Pier to seal the win.

Both teams' imports made impressive debuts as GlobalPort's Calvin Leslie made 33 points and Kia's P.J. Ramos tallied 41.
