Green Booters strengthen Final Four bid with 2-1 win against Bulldogs

By Ivan Saldajeno

La Salle remained in the top four of the UAAP football league table with a 2-1 win against NU in their match at the FEU Diliman Football Field in Quezon City.

Gerald Layumas drew first blood for the Green Booters after heading the ball off a Nate Alquiros corner inside the post at the 17th minute. Layumas then assisted on Chuckie Uy's goal in the 31st minute.

The frustrations mounted for the Bulldogs, and it went to a boiling point at the 76th minute when Elgen Antipolo was shown a red card for an apparent disrespect to the referee.

Antipolo was booked for a hard foul. He expressed his reaction through a sarcastic applause to the referee, prompting the latter to show another yellow card and send Antipolo off the pitch.

Paolo Salenga scored the consolation goal for NU off a penalty that was taken thrice as the referee found some errors in the penalty tries in the first two.

The Green Booters moved to provisional second with 12 points, just behind the UP Fighting Maroons at the top of the standings with a match at hand between Ateneo and FEU, which was playing as of press time.
