Lady Chiefs claim first NCAA title after sweeping Lady Stags

By Dugout Philippines

Arellano notched its very first NCAA women's volleyball title after beating San Sebastian in straight sets, 25-23, 25-19, 26-24, to complete a sweep of the best-of-three finals at the FilOil Flying V Arena.

The Lady Chiefs seemed poised to win the championship quickly after going up, 2-0, entering Set 3.

The Lady Stags, however, threatened to extend the match after taking a 24-23 lead after Jovelyn Prado erred on her serve.

But Menchie Tubiera forced the deuce after delivering a spike that San Sebastian failed to receive properly.

Gretchel Soltones tried to give the Lady Stags again, but her own attack went long.

Danna Henson then nailed the championship point through a nice kill.

The win erased the bitter memories of last year's finals where the Lady Chiefs blew a 2-1 lead and conceded the deciding Game 3 to the Perpetual Help Lady Altas.

Tubiera, who was hailed as the Finals MVP, finished with 18 points on 16 spikes.

"This is a sweet, sweet victory for us and the school and also historic because this is our first title," said Arellano coach Roberto Javier after the match.
