Santiago impresses in Gorayeb's NU debut; team beats UST in five

By Dugout Philippines

NU needed five sets before stopping UST's upset hopes with a 25-23, 25-22, 20-25, 22-25, 15-9 win in their UAAP women's volleyball clash at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.

Despite missing new coach Roger Gorayeb in the early parts of the game as he had to rush from the FilOil Flying V Arena just as San Sebastian finished its NCAA semis match against Arellano, NU took the first two sets and was poised for a sweep of the match.

But UST capitalize on its opponent's errors in the third set to take the 25-20 win, forcing Set 4.

E.J. Laure and Carmela Tunay then led the Tigresses' charge in the ensuing set to stretch the match to the deciding set.

But the Lady Bulldogs, now with Gorayeb on the bench, immediately raced to an 11-3 lead in Set 5 and never looked back as they tie the FEU Lady Tamaraws in fourth place with identical 3-3 records.

Jaja Santiago led NU with a season-high 28 points.

Laure, on the other hand, scored ten markers for UST, who also had to deal their own error issues in the match.
