UP battles through long sets, Bersola's injury before stunning Adamson

By Dugout Philippines

UP needed four sets, the last two going through extra points, before trampling Adamson, 22-25, 25-21, 29-27, 34-32, in the nightcap of the UAAP volleyball games at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.

Despite conceding the first set, the Lady Maroons bounced back to take the second set.

They then had to survive a tough battle from the Lady Falcons before taking the Set 3 win.

UP, however, got a scare early into the fourth set as Kathy Bersola landed awkwardly after going for a block.

The best blocker last season was sent off immediately and was hurried to the hospital as the coaching staff led by Jerry Yee suspected an ACL injury.

The Lady Maroons, however, looked poised to buck her absence as they took an 18-14 lead in the fourth.

But the Lady Falcons crawled back and further extended the set.

Amanda Villanueva, however, committed a costly error, and Chester Ong, who played extended minutes following the loss of Bersola, scored the match point for UP, which ended its first round campaign with a 3-4 card.

Nicole Tiamzon led the Lady Maroons with 22 points.

Bersola managed to score 13 markers before falling down due to the knee injury.

Jessica Galanza scored a career-high 24 points for the Lady Falcons, which ended up in a tie with the FEU Lady Tamaraws for third place with identical 3-3 slates.
