By Ivan Saldajeno

UP broke into the .500 mark with a 25-17, 25-13, 25-21 win against UE at the start of the second round of the UAAP women's volleyball tournament at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.

The Lady Maroons staved off a mini-scare by the Lady Warriors in the third period to win their fourth win in eight games, their first minus ace Kathy Bersola, who suffered a season-ending ACL injury.

Alisa Buitre took over Bersola's spot as the middle blocker and contributed eight points with one block to backstop Nicole Tiamzon, who led UP with 12 markers.

No player from UE, which dropped to 0-8, finished in double figures, with leading scorers Judith Abil and Leuseht Dawis only scoring seven points each.
