"It just boiled down to the preference of the judges." That was how UP Street Dance Club coach Von Asilo thought of the result of the UAAP Street Dance Competition, where his team won the championship anew.
Speaking to Dugout Philippines, Asilo, who is also a P.E. instructor in UP Diliman, continued, "It would depend on the judges saka yung impression ng huling run [ng La Salle at Ateneo].
The crowd at the Mall of Asia Arena drew mixed reactions as the La Salle Dance Company-Street, which won the recent Skechers Street Dance Battle, only wounded up in third, while UP SDC, which settled for third place in the said competition last December, ended up winning the UAAP plum. The Company of Ateneo Dancers, which finished behind LSDC-Street in the Skechers Battle, nosed out the latter by just 0.3 point in the race for second.
"Kahit gaano kaganda piyesa mo pero hindi mo [na-perform] nang maganda, bababa ka rin," Asilo added.
Coach Von, however, expected that the three groups will take the podium.
Asilo said, "To be honest, [I expected na] yung three schools talaga yung [maglalaban sa] top."
On the other hand, he believed that his team deserved the championship.
"For me, yung run namin was the best run we had. Masasabi kong derserving naman [kaming manalo]," he said.
Asilo mulled at the possibility of his team joining this year's Hip Hop International competition in Las Vegas, USA, where his team won third place twice in 2012 and 2013.
