QUEZON CITY--Ateneo took a step nearer to the UAAP men's volleyball championship with a 25-19, 30-28, 20-25, 25-22 win against NU in Game 1 of the best-of-three finals Wednesday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
The Blue Eagles survived a scare from the Bulldogs in the second and the third sets that even saw the Bulldogs taking the third and held on to the win.
Marck Espejo exploded for 31 points, while Ysrael Marasigan added 22 for Ateneo, which can clinch the series on Saturday at the Mall of Asia Arena.
Jan Paglinawan had 15 points for NU, which saw its star Peter Torres getting limited to only 14.
