Azkals retake solo first in ASEAN rankings

MANILA--The Philippine Azkals reclaimed sole possession of first place among Southeast Asian nations as FIFA released its latest ranking Thursday.

The Azkals broke out of a tie with Vietnam and are now the lone best football team in the ASEAN region anew by going four spots up to 128th overall. Vietnam only moved up by two notches to 130th overall, slipping to second in Southeast Asia again.

With Palestine and Lebanon down big in the latest release, the Azkals moved up to 15th place in the Asian rankings. Iran remained first despite falling a spot to 42nd overall. Lebanon suffered the biggest slip as it dropped 25 ranks to 146th overall.

Meanwhile, Italy kicked Spain out of the top ten as the Italians went two spots up to tenth place while the Spaniards dropped a spot to 11th.

The top nine countries, led by Germany, remained at their respective positions.

Barbados got the biggest gain as it moved 11 places up to 131st.
