Ferrer returns to lift UST over UP

SAN JUAN, MM—Kevin Ferrer came back from his stint with the Gilas Cadets in the SEABA Championship and led UST to a 76-72 win over UP in the nightcap of the FilOil Flying V Preseason Premier Cup on Wednesday at the FilOil Flying V Arena.

Ferrer highlighted a 19-point performance with a corner triple that gave the Growling Tigers the lead for good with 45.8 seconds left, averting a late comeback by the Fighting Maroons.

UST, however, had to mount a fight back of its own as UP, ahead for most of the match, led by as much as nine points, 31-22, in the second quarter and by six, 58-52, with 8:45 left in the game.

Ed Daquioag led a 14-3 run by the Growling Tigers to take a five-point lead, 66-61, with 3:18 left.

The Fighting Maroons bounced back with a 9-2 run capped by an equalizing triple by Jarell Lim and a go-ahead basket by Gelo Vito to retake the edge, 70-68, with 1:13 remaining.

UP got a chance to extend the lead when Louie Vigil was called for a traveling violation with a minute left, but Paul Desiderio conceded a turnover too as Agu Amar failed to receive the inbound pass by Paul Desiderio, setting up the Ferrer triple.

UP again lost the possession when Vigil stole the ball from Amar, leading to two free throws that stretched UST's lead to three, 73-70, with 34.3 seconds to go.

Desiderio airballed a contested three-pointer in the next play, and Ferrer made two more charities to put the Tigers up by five, 75-70, with 13.6 seconds left.

UP had one more crack as Henry Asilum made two free throws to cut the lead to three with 8.2 seconds left, but Ferrer sealed the win with a free throw with four seconds left.

Ferrer also grabbed seven rebounds, dished three assists, and made one block in 32 minutes of play.

Daquioag added 16 points, four rebounds, three assists, and two assists for UST, which played for the first time after 18 days.

Vito had 19 points on 8-of-11 shooting, ten rebounds, abd two assists for UP, which lost for the fourth straight time after winning its season-opener against Mapua last month.
