Global staves off Ceres' celebration effect, downs GAU to strengthen hold of 2nd place

By Ivan Saldajeno

MANILA--Witnessing Ceres celebrate its successful UFL title conquest right before their eyes, the players of erstwhile champion Global got too "heartbroken" that they played lackadaisical football in the first half of their Saturday nightcap against Green Archers.

In the final 45 minutes, they went back to their 2014 selves.

Global banked on two second half goals to defeat Green Archers, 2-0, at the Rizal Memorial Stadium to move closer to a second place finish.

Moments after the league officially handed the trophy to Ceres, Global found itself ending at the wrong end of its offense as its former goalkeeper Paolo Pascual kept a clean sheet for GAU in the first half while his teammates also got some clean looks at the goal although to no avail as Roland Sadia also played pretty well at the post.

Pika Minigeshi finally found the net for Global with a 63rd minute goal, taking advantage of a failed GAU clearance.

Paolo Salenga then sealed the win with a last-minute shot off an assist from Paolo Bugas.

Global is now three points clear of Kaya and Loyola for the second spot with the latter two clubs taking on separate opponents on Sunday night at the same venue.
