SAN JUAN, MM—San Sebastian came back from 11 points down to trounce JRU, 91-89, in the first overtime game of NCAA Season 91 at the FilOil Flying V Arena on Tuesday night.
The Golden Stags trailed, 40-51, in the third quarter but crawled back and forced overtime on a nifty layup by Ryan Costelo.
Costelo actually had a chance to finish the Heavy Bombers in regulation after they turned it over in the next offensive, but he misfired from three-point territory at the buzzer.
He, however, opened the extra period with three free throws, and Bradwyn Guinto made it a 7-0 run with back-to-back baskets to take an 83-76 lead with 2:48 left.
Mike Calisaan and Jamil Ortuoste made crucial free throws to stretch the gap to nine, 88-79, with 1:28 remaining.
But JRU made clutch charities of its own as San Sebastian began missing from the foul line as the lead eventually went down to just one, 90-89, with 2.2 after Jordan Dela Paz converted a triple.
Ortuoste, after making his first charity off a quick foul with 1.6 seconds left, intentionally missed his second. Tey Teodoro, however, had his desperation heave from beyond halfcourt on a good line to basket. The Stags got a relief as his shot did not hit the rim.
Calisaan led San Sebastian, which moved up to 1-1, with 22 points and nine rebounds, while Guinto added 17 markers and 20 boards along with four assists, two blocks, and two steals.
Teodoro finished with 15 points, two rebounds, five assists, and three steals for JRU, which lost its second straight game.
