Gilas captures silver in Jones Cup with blowout of Taipei B

TAIPEI--Despite missing out a chance to win the Jones Cup after the Saturday outcomes, Gilas Pilipinas closed out its campaign with flying colors by walloping Chinese Taipei B, 96-67, at the Xinzhuang Gymnasium on Sunday.

Gilas blew the game wide open in the second quarter, outscoring Taipei B, 26-11, to open a 50-32 halftime advantage.

The bludgeoning continued in the third, when Gilas outscored Taipei B anew, 32-21, to stretch the lead to 29, 82-53, come the fourth. Gilas even stretched the lead to 32 late in the fourth before settling for the 29-point winning margin.

Gary David led Gilas with 22 points on 10-of-15 shooting with three rebounds, one assist, and two steals, while Jayson Castro added 15 points, two rebounds, six assists, and four steals.

Gilas finished its Jones Cup fixtures with a 6-2 win-loss record, finishing in second place behind eventual champion Iran.

The Philippine team, which won four Jones Cup championships, took its first silver medal finish in the tournament.
