QUEZON CITY--The UAAP Season 78 women's basketball tournament opens on Sunday with a three-game bill at the Blue Eagle gym.

Last season's runner-up Far Eastern University, with coach Bert Flores now at the helm, takes on University of Santo Tomas in the last game of a three-game bill at 1 p.m.

In other matches, host University of the Philippines clashes with Adamson University at 9 a.m., followed by the Ateneo-University of the East game at 11 a.m.

Taking over from Allan Albano, Flores hopes to bring back the lost glory for the Lady Tamaraws, who are aiming to bounce back from their setbacks in the last two seasons.

Flores, who steered FEU to its 19th and recent championship in 2005, still has a lot of weapons on his disposal, with national team mainstay Claire Castro leading the way.

National University opens its drive for a second straight championship against De La Salle on Wednesday at 10 a.m. at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

The Lady Bulldogs won their first title after going unbeaten in 16 matches last season. Reigning MVP Afril Bernardino and Shelley Gupilan, who both stood out for the Philippines in making it to Level 1 of the recently-concluded FIBA Asia Women's Championship, will banner NU.

Ara Abaca returns for the Lady Archers, who will have Cholo Villanueva as their new coach.
