PASAY--The UST Growling Tigers exploded for seven three-pointers in the third quarter to wallop De La Salle University, 77-61, in the UAAP Season 78 men's basketball tournament at the Mall of Asia Arena Wednesday.
UST converted 11 treys in total to move to 5-1 in the standings and have a share of the top spot with Far Eastern University.
Skipper Kevin Ferrer led UST with 17 points, but only played for 16 minutes and sat out the whole third quarter after committing three fouls in the first half.
Down 31-33 after two frames, former UP Fighting Maroon Kyle Suarez burned back-to-back triples early in the third to give a 46-44 advantage for UST.
But in the ensuing play, Suarez was sidelined after getting injured off a La Salle possession while defending Jeron Teng.
Despite losing Suarez, the Tigers' three-point party continued as Louie Vigil and Ed Daquioag nailed their threes of their own to end the third on a high note, 60-46.
In the final canto, Ferrer came back and sizzled as he powered 12 of his 17 all in the payoff period.
Earlier, La Salle even managed to lead after the first quarter after opening the game with two consecutive triples, 12-18.
The Green Archers later on went to a 12-4 spurt resulting to a 14-point cushion, 16-30.
In the ensuing play, Ferrer was called for his third personal foul but still came aggressive after hitting an off-the-board three to ignite a 12-3 rally, 31-33.
Karim Abdul tallied his first double-double performance of the season with 13 points and 13 rebounds, including three steals for the España-based squad.
Daquioag and Vigil added and 11 and 10, while Suarez and Marvin Lee combined for 16 markers to lead a 26-point production for UST's bench.
Teng was only limited to 13 points to top score La Salle, which dropped to 3-3 tied with NU in the third place.
