Melecio fires 42 as La Salle-Zobel shocks Ateneo in juniors basketball opener

QUEZON CITY--Aljun Melecio made an early strong case for the UAAP juniors' basketball MVP award as he scorched for 42 points as La Salle-Zobel stunned defending champion Ateneo, 84-71, in their season opener at the Blue Eagle Gym on Saturday.

Melecio made 14 of 24 shots including seven triples, more than all the long toms the Blue Eaglets converted the entire game, to lead the way for the Junior Archers.

But all they need was a tremendous defense late in the game to seal the win.

La Salle-Zobel limited Ateneo to only 26 points in the second half to pull away for good.

Melecio also grabbed eight rebounds and three steals along with an assist, although he turned the ball over nine times.

Jolo Mendoza led the Blue Eaglets with 16 markers, three boards, two dimes, one swipe, and two blocks, while Gian Mamuyac, fresh from his FIBA Asia U16 Championship stint, added 11 points, seven caroms, and seven dishes.

In the other games of Matchday 1, NU trounced Adamson, 61-55, FEU pipped UPIS, 58-52, and UST subdued UE, 77-73.
