MANILA--The Philippines may have missed out on the 2019 FIBA World Cup hosting, but it may still get to host a FIBA event in the near future.

The Philippines, which previously hosted the 2013 FIBA Asia Championship, is among six countries in the running to host one of three Olympic Qualifying Tournaments on July 4 to 10 next year.

The Philippines is the only non-European nation among the finalist nations, which include Czech Republic, Germany, Italy, Serbia, and Turkey.

With many countries having great interests in hosting the said qualifiers, the first of its kind, the FIBA Executive Committee decided to prolong the evaluation and give its final decision on Jan. 19.

Only three out of the six countries will get the right to host the OQT, where the respective champions of each tournament will enter the Summer Olympics in Rio De Janeiro in August.

The Philippines, through the Gilas Pilipinas team, clinched a spot in the OQT after finishing second in the FIBA Asia Championship in China last month.
