MANILA--For the first time in the history of the PCCL, two teams will be crowned national champions in the same year.
The college basketball organization announced on Wednesday following the announcement of the postponement of the national semis that the championship game originally scheduled on Thursday and was supposed to play on Friday will be cancelled.
Instead, the Final Four games, which will now occupy the Thursday playdate, will determine the two co-champions.
The official statement said, “The PCCL board has decided to shorten the NCC competitions in consideration of safety and convenience of students and players. Therefore, the winners of [Thursday’s] games will be declared as co-champions of 2015 National Collegiate Championship and shall share the prize awards due them.”
The NCAA Finals rematch between San Beda and Letran will highlight the first "championship game" at 2 p.m., while USC and FEU will highlight the other "final" at 4 p.m. at the FilOil Flying V Arena.
Both games, supposed to take place as semifinal matches on Wednesday, were called off due to Typhoon Nona and were moved to Thursday.
Letran will play for the first time without Coach Aldin Ayo, who was officially named La Salle's new mentor on Wednesday night.
Team consultant Glenn Capacio is expected to be taking over the team, which will try to become the third NCAA squad to win the PCCL plum.
Meanwhile, San Beda looks to become only the third team to win the national title in consecutive years.
On the other hand, USC will try to become the first CESAFI team to be crowned national champion against fellow league champ FEU, which is eyeing a third PCCL title, the first since Arwind Santos led the squad to back-to-back pennants in 2004 and 2005.
