SAN JUAN, MM--Defending two-time champion Ateneo seeks to extend its perfect run to six games against University of the East on Wednesday in the UAAP Season 78 women’s volleyball tournament at the Filoil Flying V Arena.
The Lady Eagles hope that the 4 p.m. clash today with the winless Lady Warriors will be just a virtual cakewalk for their biggest game of the season.
The only unbeaten team in the lot with five straight victories, Ateneo has actually won 23 consecutive matches dating back to March 2014, when the Katipunan-based spikers pulled off an improbable feat of overturning De La Salle’s thrice-to-beat championship advantage.
The Lady Eagles and the Lady Spikers cross paths for the first time this season on Saturday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
“It’s a really big game for us (against De La Salle). Pero, we have a game first against UE. Let’s see,” said Valdez, who is winding up her checkered UAAP career for Ateneo.
Far Eastern University seeks to break a tie with National University in joint third as it takes on a skidding Adamson University side in the first game at 2 p.m.
The Lady Warriors hope to pull out everything out of their sleeves to end their five-game losing skid.
At 3-2, the Lady Tamaraws hope to catch up on pacesetters Lady Eagles and the Lady Spikers, as coach Shaq delos Santos was simply satisfied on the development of his team, especially on the defensive end.
FEU grinded it out with a 27-25, 21-25, 25-22, 20-25, 15-12 victory over a hard-fighting University of the Philippines side last Sunday.
“Ito yung mga kailangan namin kasi ito yung mga kulang ng team namin. Good thing yang ma-experience namin ang mga ganitong game,” said Delos Santos.
The Lady Falcons are coming off a 19-25, 23-25, 16-25 setback to the Lady Eagles last Saturday extending their losing streak to four games.
In the men’s division, titleholder Ateneo (4-1) plays UE at 8 a.m., while Adamson University (4-1) battles UP (3-2) at 10 a.m.
