DLSU escapes gutsy UP to make 2-0 start

PASIG--The De La Salle University Lady Spikers disposed a resilient University of the Philippines Lady Maroons in 4 sets, 25-14, 25-13, 19-25, 25-20, to go 2-0 in the UAAP women's volleyball tournament at the PhilSports Arena on Saturday.

The Lady Spikers stomped their class early in the first two sets courtesy of their strong serving that made receiving difficult for the young Lady Maroons squad.

Carol Cerveza’s serve during the first set paved the way for UP’s receiving woes.

Coach Jerry Yee made a drastic change in the third set by relegating Nicole Tiamzon to the setter role in favor of Jewel Lai.

Tiamzon’s conversion proved fruitful as UP managed to steal a set from DLSU.

UP displayed better floor defense and better offensive choices to make it difficult for La Salle’s organized defense to guess what UP was going to do next.

UP attempted to extend the match to a deciding set with contributions from rookies Isa Molde, Diana Carlos and Justine Dorog, but DLSU was quick to extinguish any comeback UP was trying to run.

After UP’s surprise change within the match, Coach Ramil De Jesus’ squad was quick to adjust their game to capture the match in 4 sets.

Named as the best player of the game was Majoy Baron, who tallied 17 points.

She received big help from rookie Tin Tiamzon.
