TAGUIG--Gelo Diamante's first half strike was enough for De La Salle to remain on top of the table following a 1-0 victory over University of the East in the UAAP Season 78 men's football tournament on Sunday at the McKinley Hill Stadium.

Diamante scored from a Yoshiharu Koizumi cross in the 36th minute to put the Green Booters ahead and never looked back.

Still undefeated this season, De La Salle climbed to 13 points.

Earlier, Xavier Alcuaz and Jarvey Gayoso netted second half goals as Ateneo regained its winning ways with a 3-1 drubbing of National University.

The Blue Booters now have six points behind the Bulldogs' seven.

NU skipper Paolo Salenga opened the scoring with a sick 35 yard screamer top corner goal in the 11th minute before Ateneo equalized on the 29th minute courtesy of a Julian Roxas header from a Mikko Mabanag free kick.

On Saturday, University of Santo Tomas hacked out a 1-0 win over defending champion Far Eastern University.

Dionisio Busmion Jr. was on target in the 73rd minute to give the Growling Tigers their third win of the season.

UST, which failed to enter the Final Four last season, now has 11 points in second spot.

The Tamaraws have also dropped two straight as they stayed at five points, while the Red Warriors remained goalless and without a point this season.
