NU remains on top of UAAP men's chess

MANILA--National University blanked University of the Philippines, 4-0, to keep its hold of the top spot in the men’s division Sunday in the UAAP Season 78 chess tournament at the Henry Sy Sr. Hall inside the La Salle campus.

IM Paulo Bersamina, FM Austin Literatus, Vince Medina and Angelo Mansanero produced victories for the Bulldogs, who hiked their four-round total to 13.5 points.

Other men’s matches showed University of Santo Tomas beating Adamson University, 3-1, to stay in second spot with 11 points, Far Eastern University toppling defending champion De La Salle, 3-1, andle Ateneo downing University of Santo Tomas, 3-1.

The Green Archers have 9.5 points in third place, just half-a-point ahead of the fourth-running Tamaraws (9.0).

Women’s titleholder FEU, meanwhile, overwhelmed NU, 3.5.-.5 to seize the solo lead with 12.5 points.

WIM Janelle Frayna, WFM Shania Mendoza and Gladys Romero scored victories for the Lady Tamaraws, while Joribene Bonifacio halved a point against Venice Vicente to avert a shutout for the Lady Bulldogs.

De La Salle, behind WIM Bernadette Galas and WFM Marie Antoinette San Diego, whipped UP, 3.5-.5 to tie UST, a 3-1 winner over UE, in second place with 11.5 points.

In the other women’s match, Adamson University blasted Ateneo, 4-0.
