TAGUIG--University of the Philippines subdued University of the East, 2-0, to claim its first win in the UAAP Season 78 men's football tournament on Saturday at the McKinley Hill Stadium.
Raphael Resuma's 18th minute strike from an assist by Roland Saavedra opened the scoring for the Fighting Maroons.
Vincent Aguilar then blasted a late goal, scoring it straight to the bottom right corner in the 89th minute to clinch it for UP.
The Maroons, who missed rookie JB Borlongan and Christian Lapas due to national U19 duties in China, now has four points in fifth place.
The Red Warriors, who have yet to score a goal this season, remained at one point.
Defending champion Far Eastern University and La Salle clash in a rematch of last season's Finals at 4 p.m. on Sunday at the Taguig venue.
National University and University of Santo Tomas in the day's other match at 7 p.m.
Still the remaining unbeaten teams in the league, the Bulldogs and the Green Archers are on top of the table with seven points, with the Bustillos-based booters ahead in goals.
The Tamaraws and the Growling Tigers are tied with five points in joint third, drawing twice and winning once.
