CHENNAI--The Philippine Volcanoes took the bronze medal in the first round of the Asia Rugby Development Sevens Series over the weekend.

The Volcanoes won their first four games before losing in the semifinals to eventual leg champion Chinese Taipei.

The Volcanoes downed UAE, which will host the next round of the series on Feb. 26-27, in the consolation game to secure the third-place finish.

Jonico Hardwick scored ten tries in the first round, while Gaz Holgate made 18 conversions.

"Whilst we are proud of the 3rd place finish we will be fighting to win the 2nd and final leg in Dubai to achieve promotion,” skipper Justin Coveney vowed.

The Volcanoes will leave for Dubai on Thursday and will quickly swing back to action on Friday.

A championship win for the Volcanoes will give them a better chance of claiming the lone promotion spot to the Asia Rugby Sevens Series.
