MANILA--In a game where Shane Edwards was silent, Calvin Abueva came to work.
Abueva carried Alaska virtually to his lonesome in the dying moments of its Saturday night match-up in Davao against Star, scoring nine points in the final six minutes to lift his team to the win and a quarterfinal berth in the PBA Commissioner's Cup.

“Lahat kasi kami binibigyan ng kumpiyansa ni [Coach Alex Compton]. Hindi lang ilang players ang iniikot niya kaya siyempre, kami naman as a player, magta-trabaho talaga para manalo ang team,” Abueva reasoned behind his late explosion.
"The Beast", who would wind up with 21 markers in the victory, was named the Accel-PBA Press Corps Player of the Week for the said clutch effort as the league announced on Monday.
The Easter week edition of the said citation also had Ginebra's Greg Slaughter and Chris Ellis, Meralco's Cliff Hodge, TNT's Troy Rosario, and Rain Or Shine's Jeff Chan as nominees.
The Aces can secure one of two twice-to-beat advantages given to the top two teams after the eliminations if they beat the Meralco Bolts on Friday night and the NLEX Road Warriors exactly a week later.
