MANILA--Veteran actor Richard Gomez, who unknown to many is also a multi-sport athlete, will take over the mayoralty post of the city of Ormoc.
Gomez, who ran under the Nationalist People's Coalition, unseated incumbent mayor Edward Codilla as per the final and official count of the election there.
Gomez garnered 53,234 votes, nearly 9,000 more than those of Codilla (44,453), who was Liberal Party's representative. A third candidate, independent aspirant Mar Gallardo, only got 608 votes.
Gomez avenged his tight 2013 election loss to Codilla, who won that time by just 2,248 votes.
Gomez became a SEA Games gold medalist in fencing alongside national team stints in rowing and shooting.
He recently gave pro volleyball a try, joining PLDT in the defunct PSL men's volleyball tiff and the Asian Men's Volleyball Club Championship and Champion in Spikers' Turf.
