San Beda pounces Letran in FilOil clash

By Ivan Saldajeno

SAN JUAN, MM--A month before they lock horns in the opening day of the NCAA season, San Beda sent a strong signal to Letran that they will reclaim the league title from them.

The Red Lions banked on a strong second half to clamp the Knights, 84-70, in their FilOil Flying V Preseason Premier Cup match-up at the FilOil Flying V Centre on Sunday.

After engaging in a close first half, San Beda began their second half onslaught by opening a 15-point cushion, 63-48, late in the third quarter.

Letran tried to inch closer through a 10-2 run spanning the last two periods to cut the lead to seven, 67-60, with 7:25 left in the game, but San Beda countered with a 16-4 run to pull away for good.

Javee Mocon led the Red Lions, the defending FilOil champs, with 19 points, eight rebounds, five assists, two blocks, and one steal.

William Navarro made an impression by going 4-of-5 from the field and 4-of-4 from the line to finish with 15 points in eight minutes of play.

Dan Sara, despite being quiet scoring-wise, played the facilitator pretty well by dishing ten assists.

Rey Nambatac and Bong Quinto each tallied 13 markers for the Knights, whose NCAA title defense begins right at the hands of the Red Lions on June 25.
