San Beda barges to FilOil quarterfinals by subduing Adamson

By Ivan Saldajeno

SAN JUAN, MM—San Beda formalized their entry to the next round of the FilOil Flying V Preseason Premier Cup with an 86-81 victory over Adamson at the FilOil Flying V Centre on Thursday.

The Red Lions set aside a sluggish first quarter and took control in the next two periods.

The Soaring Falcons tried to mount a comeback in the fourth frame, but a crucial mistake by JD Tungcab cost them a chance to steal the win.

With 19.1 seconds left in the game and San Beda up, 85-81, Tungcab failed to foul Arnaut Noah, letting him chop 12 seconds before getting fouled. It was only Adamson's third team foul.

Two fouls later, Noah sank a free throw that turned out to be the insurance point for the Lions.

Donald Tankoua ended up with 21 points, 15 rebounds, and one assist before letting Noah finish the game for San Beda, which can still end up in first place in Group B depending on the results of the Sunday games and La Salle's game with Lyceum later Thursday.

Robbie Manalang had 19 points, two rebounds, and seven assists for Adamson, which fell to a tie with UE for fourth place in Group B ahead of their clash on Sunday.
