MANILA--One of the guys that some Gilas fans thought was a surprise pick to the national team's FIBA OQT team is Ryan Reyes.
Once considered by some as a long shot to the Final 12 because of the depth of the training pool, the Talk 'n Text guard showed dedication during training and made a statement in one friendly against Iran last month by scoring four triples in the said game, helping him get a spot in the OQT team.
"Ryan is a guy I really like a lot, and I think he understands my confidence in him. He plays very comfortably with him. I think he's one of the best players you can have out on the floor in any situation. He's intelligent, defensively tough, and when he's hitting shots, then you have the best of both worlds," said Gilas coach Tab Baldwin.
In an interview with Dugout Philippines, the 6-foot-2 guard aired his take on the said explosion.
"If I have the open look, I'm just gonna take that shot. The offense that Coach Tab has is free-willing offense," said Reyes.
Reyes will try to prove that he truly deserves an OQT lineup spot as he helps Gilas take one of three seats to the Rio Olympics on July 5-10 at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay.
