KUALA LUMPUR--Batang Gilas moves on to the quarterfinals of the FIBA Asia 3X3 U18 Championship after sweeping its Day 2 assignments in knockout fashion on Saturday.
The quartet of John Clemente, John Galinato, Kyle Tan, and Rhayyan Amsali scored back-to-back 21-pointers against Japan and Vietnam respectively.
Batang Gilas engaged in an early scoring spree with the Japanese squad before showing their might late to hack a 21-17 win.
Galinato, who was cold against Qatar on Friday night, then went berserk from beyond the arc against Vietnam to drub them, 21-5.
With a 3-1 record after the two-day preliminaries, Batang Gilas will finish second in Group B behind Qatar, which swept their own elimination round assignments in style, scoring 21 points in each of their four games.
Japan, with a 2-2 record, finishes third, while Vietnam, whose lone win came against South Korea, takes the fourth seed in the knockout stages on Sunday.
Their quarterfinal opponents will depend on the results of the Group A games later Saturday.
Malaysia, Singapore, and Indonesia are in a tight battle for first place, while Kyrgyzstan and Sri Lanka are slugging it out for the last quarterfinal seat.
