Casimero to defend IBF belt against Edwards at Golovkin-Brook undercard

MANILA--Barely two months after impressively winning the IBF flyweight title, Filipino boxing sensation John Riel Casimero got his taste of being in a major boxing fight card.

The IBF announced on Monday that Casimero will defend his belt against rising English pug Charlie Edwards at the undercard of the colossal undisputed middleweight championship match between Gennady Golovkin and Kell Brook on Sept. 11 (Philippine Time) in London.

Casimero, who knocked out Amnat Ruenroeng for the flyweight belt on May 25, now tests the mettle of Edwards, whose seven straight wins to start his pro career earned him his first world title shot.

The fight could pave the way for Casimero to be more well known around the world like how Manny Pacquiao used his 2002 bout against Jorge Julio at the co-main event of the Mike Tyson-Lennox Lewis fight card as the springboard to his illustrious international boxing career.

Edwards, on the other hand, took to Twitter his gratitude of being part of the blockbuster fight card highlighted by the Golovkin-Brook match.
In an interview, Edwards, who is actually part of a fight card on Sunday (Philippine Time) in Berlin headlined by the WBA super middleweight title fight between current holder Giovanni De Carolis and challenger Tyron Zeuge, vowed that he will beat Casimero for the title in front of his home country fans.
