MANILA--In a sad development, the CWBL had to give up staging what could have been its very first season.
According to reports late Friday night, broadcasting giant ABSCBN pulled out as the league's supposed TV presenter, prompting the league executives, led by renowned coach Joe Lipa, who serves as the vice president for basketball operations, to tell the six participating clubs that it will not push through as scheduled on Aug. 7.
A brainchild of Lipa, the CWBL is patterned after the defunct home-and-away pro league MBA, which in its first four seasons had ABSCBN as its broadcasting partner.
The league, however, already had problems regarding its first staging by as early as 2014 as the league kept on changing dates of its inaugural game day before finally agreeing with the August 2016 start.
